Passkeys: Why Passwords Are Fading and How to Add Passkey Login
Passkeys let users sign in with a fingerprint, face or device PIN instead of a password. They are safer against phishing and easier for customers. Here is how they work.
Passwords are a constant headache. People reuse them, forget them and type them into fake websites. For businesses, that means account takeovers, support tickets and abandoned sign-ups. Passkeys offer a better way, and they are now supported by the major platforms from Apple, Google and Microsoft.
What is a passkey?
A passkey replaces the password with a secure key stored on the user's phone, computer or password manager. To sign in, the user simply confirms with their fingerprint, face or device PIN. No password to remember, no password to steal.
Passkeys are built on open standards from the FIDO Alliance and the W3C, known as FIDO2 and WebAuthn.
How passkeys work, simply
- When a user creates a passkey, their device makes a pair of keys: a private key that never leaves the device, and a public key stored by your website.
- When they sign in, your website sends a challenge. The device signs it with the private key after the user confirms with fingerprint, face or PIN.
- Your website checks the signature with the public key. If it matches, the user is in.
Your server never stores a secret that hackers could steal and reuse.
Why passkeys are safer
- Phishing-resistant. A passkey only works on the real website it was created for, so fake look-alike sites cannot capture it.
- No reused passwords. Each passkey is unique to one website.
- Nothing valuable to leak. A stolen database of public keys is useless to attackers.
Why customers like them
- Sign in with a fingerprint or face in seconds
- Nothing to remember or reset
- Passkeys can sync across a user's devices through their platform account or password manager
Adding passkeys to your website or app
- Keep a fallback at first. Offer passkeys alongside your existing login while users get used to them.
- Invite, do not force. After a normal login, offer "Sign in faster next time with a passkey".
- Support account recovery. Plan what happens if a user loses all their devices, such as verified email or phone recovery.
- Use proven libraries. WebAuthn libraries exist for most backend languages and mobile platforms; avoid building cryptography yourself.
- Test across devices. Check the experience on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
Who should consider passkeys now?
Any business with customer accounts benefits, especially e-commerce stores, SaaS products, banking-style apps, healthcare portals and education platforms where account security matters.
The bottom line
Passkeys make login both safer and simpler, a rare win-win in security. Adding them is a strong signal to customers that you take their accounts seriously.
